正しくHTMLページを表示するには、Web ブラウザはどの文字セット（文字エンコーディング）を使用していするかを知る必要があります。

文字エンコーディングとは？

ASCIIは、最初の文字エンコーディング標準（文字セットとも呼ばれます）でした。これは、インターネット上で使用することのできる 127 種の英数字を定義しています。

ASCIIは、数字 (0-9)、英字 (A-Z) および ! $ + - ( ) @ < > のようないくつかの特殊文字をサポートしています。

ANSI (Windows-1252) は、オリジナルな Windows の文字セットで、256種のコードをサポートしていました。

ISO-8859-1（ASCIIの拡張）は、HTML 4 のデフォルト文字セットで、これも256種のコードをサポートしていました。

ANSI および ISO は制約が多すぎるため、デフォルトの文字エンコーディングは、HTML5 で UTF-8 に変更されました。

UTF-8 (Unicode) は、ほぼ世界中の全ての文字や記号をカバーしています。
